3 Things a CCTV Camera Can Find Underground Before You Start Digging
You can’t always see a drainage problem from above ground. That’s the whole issue with drains, everything looks fine on the surface right up until it isn’t. A CCTV drain inspection in Auckland gives you a clear look inside the pipe itself, so you know exactly what’s happening underground before anyone reaches for a shovel.
Here are three things we find on a regular basis that you’d never spot without a camera down there.
1. Root Intrusion
Tree roots are relentless. They’ll find the tiniest crack or joint in a pipe and work their way in, chasing moisture. From the surface, everything looks completely normal, the lawn’s fine, the driveway’s fine, nothing gives it away. Underground, it’s a different story, roots can slowly choke a pipe over months or years until you’re left with a proper blockage or, in worse cases, a collapsed section.
A CCTV drain inspection spots root intrusion early, often well before it becomes a full blockage, which means a much simpler (and cheaper) fix than waiting until it’s an emergency.
2. Structural Damage
Cracks, fractures, and collapsed sections happen for all sorts of reasons, ground movement, age, tree roots doing their damage over time, even just old materials that were never built to last this long. None of it shows up from ground level.
This is exactly why unnecessary digging is such a waste, without a proper look inside first, you’re guessing at where the damage actually is. A drain survey pinpoints the exact location and type of damage, so if digging is genuinely needed, it happens in the right spot, not three metres either side of it.
3. Blockages and Build-Up
Not every blockage is dramatic. A lot of the ones we find are slow build-ups, grease, debris, mineral scale, that have been narrowing the pipe gradually rather than causing a sudden, obvious problem. By the time you notice slow drainage or bad smells, there’s often been an issue quietly developing for a while.
A camera inspection shows exactly what’s built up and where, so the right fix gets applied, whether that’s a proper clean-out or something more involved.
Why This Matters Before You Dig
If something isn’t right with your drains, the instinct is often to start digging to find the problem. But without knowing exactly what’s down there first, that’s a guessing game, expensive, disruptive, and not always accurate.
A CCTV drain inspection takes the guesswork out of it completely. You get a clear, recorded look inside the pipe, an accurate read on what’s actually going on, and a much better idea of what (if anything) needs fixing before any ground gets broken.
